Have you ever thought about how the world’s communication skills and ways are changing ever so quickly, everyday?! Webcams are just one way to make communicating easier and more effective with the live video picture. They already have classes via webcams in some schools, called itv classrooms. I have never taken a class like this, but know people who have and I would think it would be hard for me to concentrate in a class like this.
Skype is used by so many people today to keep in touch with loved ones and to also meet new people. It is a great way to keep in touch with people who live across the country or even world. I have friends who are overseas for the guard and being able to see and talk with them just makes the whole situation a little better. Talking with my sister and 2 year old niece who just live in St. Paul, MN is very nice, because even though the cities is not that far away I do not get there every weekend and my little niece is constantly growing and learning new things. The only problem I have with communicating over webcams is that after having access to communicate like that with people who live far from us, will it effect how much we really get to see them? For instance, I get to see my 2 year old little niece on the webcam; I could easily just keep pushing off going to visit because I can constantly see her and talk to her whenever on the webcam.
Another interesting fact about webcams I found was more and more people are doing job interviews on them. Inovahire.com is just one of many sites that offer this. They offer recorded interviews, in which you can prerecord yourself answering the questions they give you ahead of time and send it to whatever company you are applying to. There are also, live interviews, in which you meet at a certain time with someone from the company who will conduct a live interview with you via webcam.

It's interesting thatt you mention the job interviews over web cams. I actually utilize this feature in Wimba for the job search skills class I teach. I even won a Wimba Wow award for using it for my mock interviews. I think it's cool there are actually sites offering this service for real and I plan to incorporate these into my class. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of webcam job interviews but I think they sound like a great idea, when necessary. Of course if it's possible, meeting face-to-face would be best, but for someone half way across the country or even world, a webcam would be a better tool to use than a telephone for interviewing. The webcam on our laptops is the only webcam I've ever had. I haven't used it yet, but I think I might look into doing so. I know a few people who have webcams so that would be a great idea to keep in touch.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
Really? People are doing job interviews over webcams? It's kind of weird that you can pre-record your answers to questions. I thought the point of an interview was seeing how well someone does if they're unexpectedly thrown a really hard question.
ReplyDeleteI've recently been introduced to webcams, thanks to the new computers here at VCSU. So far, I'm really liking them. I might not have to rent out a video camera as much from the help desk if I just need a little clip for a class.
I don't communicate with anyone over webcam, I usually just call them. But I definitely would use it if someone I knew was overseas in the war.
I usually just use my webcam to mess around with with friends. I can see where talking to a loved one could make the webcam a very great communication tool. Also, a webcam job interview seems like such a good idea. Why travel all that way for your interview? I can see where the webcams attached to our computers could be a very good tool to use for school
ReplyDeleteKelsi,
ReplyDeleteI for one have really mixed feelings when it comes to webcams. I use Skype and like being able to see my friends and family. However, I know many of my family members, particularly the older ones, are reluctant to try this new technology. As far as the digital classrooms go, we have that in my old high school. I think it’s a great technology and my school probably wouldn’t be open today if it didn’t exist.
I recently bought a new laptop and there is a webcam built right into it. I had never used anything like it before but I have now. When I was without my cell phone while out of town last week, I used it to tell my daughter goodnight. I wasn’t able to see or hear her but she was able to see me and my wife said she was laughing and thought it was funny that I was on the computer. She did go right to bed though. What scares me about all of this though is where does it go from here? We have instant communication, what else can we have?
